Residential Flatwork
Sidewalks, Curb & Gutter
A sidewalk is a small slab with all the same enemies: expansive clay, tree roots, and water with nowhere to go. Curb and gutter is what keeps that water moving instead of soaking into the ground beside your flatwork. We build both — prepped, reinforced, and photographed before the pour.
The Clay Challenge
What This Ground Does to This Work
Sidewalks heave when clay under one section swells more than the next — usually near downspouts, low spots, or trees. Curb and gutter fails when water gets behind it and washes out the base. Both problems start with drainage, which is exactly what the walk-through maps out before we touch a shovel.
The B&T Spec
What's Included
- Walk-through mapping the water: downspouts, low spots, and where runoff actually goes
- Compacted base under every foot of walk — no pouring over bare clay
- Reinforcement matched to the run
- Control joints spaced to the slab, cut clean
- Curb and gutter formed to carry water away from your flatwork and your foundation
- Broom finish for wet-weather footing
Who It's For
Homeowners replacing a heaved, cracked walk, turning a mud path into a real sidewalk, or adding curbing to control runoff on their property. Combined projects meet our 200 sq ft minimum.
Who It's Not For
Municipal and commercial curb contracts — our curb and gutter work is residential. For public sidewalk questions (who fixes what), see our guide in the resources.
Proof Before Pour
The Process, Applied to Your Sidewalks + Curb & Gutter
1.Walk
A sit-down and walk-through before ground breaks. Nothing gets assumed — grade, drainage, access, and what you actually want out of the slab.
2.Prep
Base compacted. Rebar set. Bradley photographs the base depth and steel and texts it to your phone before any truck backs in.
3.Pour
Owner on site for every pour. A jobsite photo texted to you by 5pm every work day, so you always know where your project stands.
4.Prove
A final walk-around with you before we leave the property. You keep every photo of what went under your concrete.
Timeline: Most sidewalk and curb runs prep and pour in a few work days. Foot traffic comes back before vehicle traffic ever would — exact timing in your quote.
